Formally established in 2009, the partnership began as a cultural exchange facilitated by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and its Executive Director at the time, Al Head.

The sister city relationship between Montgomery, Alabama, and Pietrasanta, Italy, is rooted in a shared appreciation for the arts and a surprising connection beneath the surface—marble.

Both cities are located near regions known for high-quality marble—Carrara in Italy and Sylacauga in Alabama. This shared natural resource first linked the cities more than a century ago when Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti moved to Alabama and praised Sylacauga marble as equal to Carrara’s. His legacy includes the marble bust "Head of Christ," housed in Montgomery.

In 2006, Alabama artist Nall, who had been working in Pietrasanta, deepened the connection by gifting the city a $1 million sculpture titled the “Peace Frame.” This act inspired cultural exchanges and artist collaborations that continue to thrive today. Sculptors, musicians, and dancers regularly travel between the two cities, and Italian artists now participate annually in the Sylacauga Marble Festival.

Former mayors Strange of Montgomery and Mallegni of Pietrasanta cemented their bond through mutual visits, honorary citizenships, and delegations focused on art, design, and community development.
